How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

How much should we tip for our wedding hair and makeup artists?

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

We did a trial run and it was just beautiful and they accepted and wanted feedback from the trial. They asked for inspiration pictures and were able to achieve the look I was thinking of. As someone with naturally curly hair, looking for a hair stylist that understands and can make my hair look good was something important for me. Prior to wedding day, they asked for inspiration pictures from the bridesmaids. There were 7 girls getting hair and makeup or just one service. The stylist had schedules and we were able to have everyone done in time. We had a great morning with Michelle and Monique and we all looked so great all day long. The airbrush makeup is in fact cry proof. So glad to have found a glam team that was understanding, fun, professional, and amazing !”

“I am a Filipino and so is my bridal party. I really needed someone who understood an Asian face. I also needed someone who could listen to me, my needs and those of my party to help us all look and feel our best. Rie delivered and more! From planning the day and on our trial, Rie was very kind, open to suggestions and creative when it came to my vision. She was patient to try out the different hair dos I wanted to sample. On the day, she amped up her talent and made me look even more beautiful than when she met me for a trial. Even my FIL thought so! You know it’s real when men notice! Haha. She also took care of my mother, who is hard to please, but was able to say good things about her hair and make up that same day too. Overall what a beautiful experience. “I can’t say enough great things about Amber. From the get-go, she was so warm, welcoming and so very kind. Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities. The hair and makeup trial were meticulous, and Jenna addressed every comment I had so that on the big day, it was absolutely perfect. As a 53-year old “bride” renewing our wedding vows, I did not expect to look like a supermodel, but Jenna made me look and feel more beautiful than I ever dreamt possible. I included my daughter, nieces and close friends for hair and make up services and found Jenna and her team amazing in how they managed multiple needs for multiple individuals and kept us on schedule.
